Many business owners come to me for advice on getting government grants.  They are hoping the government will give them money to start or continue their business.  However, the Small Business Administration website states:

“The SBA does not provide grants for starting or expanding a business… SBA has authority to make grants to non-profit and educational organizations…, but does not have authority to make grants to small businesses.  Some business grants are available through state and local programs, nonprofit organizations and other groups. For example, some states provide grants for expanding child care centers; creating energy efficient technology; and developing marketing campaigns for tourism. These grants are not necessarily free money, and usually require the recipient to match funds or combine the grant with other forms of financing such as a loan.”

Follow this column to find out how your business might be eligible for state assistance, or in the meantime, for New York State businesses, go to ecidany.com or esd.ny.gov.
